Villa Rey Bugallo, an unparalleled and timeless residence-museum, theater of the Macchiaioli, set at the top of an exclusive valley, a superb agricultural and wildlife reserve amidst vineyards, olive groves and centuries-old woods, in a unique and intact landscape just a few kilometers from sea, from Florence, Lucca, Pisa and its international airport, Forte dei Marmi and the Cinque Terre.
The Villa
The central Villa is the ancient residence of the Macchiaiolo painter Augusto Rey who erected and fully decorated it in 1895. The eighteenth-century Villa Santernetti with frescoes by Giovanni Tempesti crowns and forms a single property to the south and Villa Santernetti to the north High Tower of Bugallo with frescoes by Pietro and Giuseppe Della Valle.
Crespina and its enchanting hills have always been a place of choice for artists since ancient times but it was in the 19th century that the Macchiaioli took up residence there, drawing inspiration for their extraordinary artistic production.
